About

Chris Lotz is a Cape Town-based cinematographer with three decades of experience. Known for his dedication, relentless work ethic, and commitment to elevating every project he takes on, Chris consistently prioritises the story, no matter the budget or other challenges. At 53, he still sees himself as a young filmmaker, always eager to learn, grow, push creative boundaries and never allowing himself to become complacent.

Chris began his career in the mid-90s, working on documentaries with the ambition of becoming a narrative Director of Photography. Frustrated by the limitations of early video technology, he continually pushed both himself and the equipment to achieve a cinematic look in an industry that often settled for less. His work quickly stood out, earning him a reputation as one of Cape Town’s most sought-after cameramen.

In 2013, his long-held dream became reality when he was approached to shoot the feature film The Endless River, which was selected for the Venice Film Festival. This pivotal moment launched him fully into the narrative world, where he felt he truly belonged. Today, Chris focuses primarily on local films and drama series, collaborating with some of the industry’s most talented directors on visually striking projects that continue to receive critical acclaim.
